Job Hunting Tips for Fresh Graduates

A new batch of fresh graduates will soon be joining the battalion of job seekers and their ongoing war against unemployment. Although they have a common enemy, job hunting is a competition in which all candidates are, essentially, left to fend for themselves.

While it's fairly simple enough to search for job openings, especially with the availability of the Internet and online job portals, it's much harder to get considered for a position and be hired.

Although armed with an impressive transcript and a diploma that boasts the name of a prestigious university, there are fresh graduates who are hesitant to send their resume knowing that prospective employers would rather hire somebody with years of work experience.

So how could a fresh graduate compete against somebody with previous work experience?

Here are a few job hunting tips for fresh graduates:

1. Improve Your Image on Social Networking Sites
Your presence on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter are important. You never know if the company would perform background checks. Update your profile and remove pictures that could possibly leave a bad impression on prospective employers.

2. Online Professional Profile
Register at job portals or corporate social networking sites (like LinkedIn) and reach out to companies who are looking for candidates. They will access your information through your online profiles. Including the right information (such as useful skills, in your profile may be the key for employers to contact you.

3. Customize Your Resume
Ultimately, the resume will reflect who you are. For each job opening, send a customized resume that will cater to the needs of the company. Although it's much easier to have one template that outlines all of your skills, it's more productive to send a resume that will highlights the skills they require.

4. Read and Edit
Meticulously proofread your resume and cover letter. Scan both documents for typographical errors. Take time to write, read and edit your resume. You can even ask somebody to proofread and spot any mistakes you might have missed. You could also ask them for feedback. Give the prospective employer the notion that you are a conscientious individual.

5. Professionalism
Although a fresh graduate, you should always act courteously and professionally so that employers will see that you are respectable and responsible. If called for a job interview, make sure that you are well groomed and dressed accordingly. It would also be a good idea if you thank them for the time and opportunity they have given you.
